Georgian PM criticises Moldova leadership over sovereignty remarks, contrasts it with Georgia’s state policy

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Wednesday criticised comments made by Moldova’s senior officials regarding sovereignty, arguing that Georgia follows the opposite approach focused on strengthening national independence and state interests.

In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that it was “unimaginable” for high-ranking officials of any country to speak about relinquishing sovereignty, stressing that protecting sovereignty should be the primary duty of national leadership.

“When a senior representative of a country makes such a statement, it is difficult even to comprehend it, let alone justify it or discuss it seriously. It is unimaginable when one of the country's top officials makes a statement about surrendering sovereignty. If there is one thing a country's leader should protect, it is sovereignty. Yet, as you can see, things are different in Moldova”, he said.

The Prime Minister further suggested that positive reactions from certain external actors toward Moldova’s leadership were linked to this perceived willingness to compromise sovereignty, which he described as a concerning trend.

“The highest representatives of the government themselves are prepared to give up the country's sovereignty, and they are rewarded for this by certain forces that are, in fact, oriented toward undermining the sovereignty of various countries. This is entirely logical”, Kobakhidze noted.

He concluded that Georgia’s policy direction was fundamentally different and aligned with strengthening, not weakening, national sovereignty.

“Any such statement is incomprehensible to me. We have a completely opposite position, one that is specifically aimed at strengthening and safeguarding sovereignty. Therefore, I think it is logical that certain forces which oppose our country and the Georgian people systematically and consistently praise the Moldovan authorities. That seems entirely logical to me”, he concluded.
