The United States Embassy in Georgia on Tuesday welcomed the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office announcement about the arrest of several individuals on charges of defrauding Georgian citizens related to illegal entry to the United States and document forgery.

The Embassy noted that the case reflected months of cooperation between the United States and Georgian law enforcement bodies aimed at combating organised criminal activity related to illegal entry into the United States.

“We welcome the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia announcement today about the arrest of several individuals on charges of defrauding Georgian citizens related to illegal entry to the United States and document forgery. It is the result of months of strong law enforcement cooperation between the United States and Georgia. Thank you to the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia and Georgian law enforcement officials involved in the investigation and operation”, the Embassy said.

Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office has arrested three individuals and initiated criminal proceedings against six others for defrauding citizens of large sums of money, facilitating the illegal stay of Georgian citizens abroad, organizing the submission of false information in asylum applications, and producing and distributing forged official documents.

Tbilisi Prosecutor Giorgi Mikaia said that a joint operation conducted by the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office and the Regional Security Office of the United States Embassy uncovered two organized criminal groups involved in immigration-related fraud schemes.
