Georgia named among world’s top 40 lowest money laundering risk countries

The Basel Institute on Governance has released the 2025 edition of the Basel Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Index, which assesses money laundering and related financial crime risks across 177 countries and territories worldwide.
Countries are ranked from highest to lowest risk, meaning that the most vulnerable jurisdictions appear at the top of the list, while countries with stronger AML frameworks and lower risks occupy the lower positions.
According to the 2025 Index, Georgia has recorded a notable improvement in its money laundering risk profile.
Georgia received a score of 4.32 on a 10-point scale, marking an improvement compared to previous years. In the global ranking, Georgia advanced by 27 positions, moving from 113th to 140th place, which represents the country’s best historical result since the index was first introduced.
With this performance, Georgia ranks 37th among the world’s top 40 countries with the lowest money laundering risk. In addition, Georgia is included in the top 20 among NATO and European Union member and candidate countries.
In terms of resilience to money laundering risks, Georgia now outperforms five G7 countries and 21 member states of the OECD, Schengen Area, European Union, and NATO. These countries include the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Malta, Cyprus, Montenegro, Albania, Türkiye, Singapore, and South Korea.
The Basel AML Index has been produced annually since 2012. Over the past 14 years, Georgia’s overall ranking has improved by 60 positions, reflecting sustained progress in strengthening its AML and financial integrity frameworks.
The report draws on data and thematic assessments from reputable international sources, including the World Bank, the US Department of State, the World Economic Forum, the World Justice Project, and other international evaluation bodies.
