Davit Matikashvili, the Chair of the Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday dismissed a report by Lithuanian MEP Rasa Juknevičienė, describing it as yet another biased document authored by figures who, he claimed, were hostile toward the Georgian people.
Matikashvili’s comments came after a report by Juknevičienė called for sanctions against representatives of the ruling Georgian Dream party and certain media outlets.
He argued that the document was based on fabricated facts and reflected an attempt to target Georgia’s independent media.
Matikashvili said the report had “no value whatsoever” and described it as an example of the attitude toward Georgia displayed by some members of the European Parliament.
“Those individuals are friends of Saakashvili. In this report, we see passages that do not correspond to reality and are entirely based on falsified facts. At the same time, we see another attempt to attack Georgia’s free media and sanction television channels whose voices are heard by society and which inform the public of the truth”, Matikashvili said.
The European Parliament is expected to vote on Juknevičienė’s report on Georgia later on Wednesday. The document includes, among other measures, calls for sanctions against Georgian Dream representatives and specific media organizations.
