Georgia’s Special Penitentiary Service says no deterioration in Elene Khoshtaria’s health, continuous medical care provided

Georgia’s Special Penitentiary Service on Tuesday responded to a statement made by attorney Shota Tutberidze, who represents convicted politician Elene Khoshtaria, and urged politically interested individuals to refrain from spreading what it describes as false and unverified information.
The Service noted that the vast majority of Khoshtaria’s diagnosed medical conditions are chronic illnesses that were identified before her admission to the penitentiary institution and are characterised by periodic flare-ups.
The Service stressed that she has not expressed complaints or dissatisfaction regarding the medical staff and continues to receive all necessary healthcare services, further pointing out that there has been no deterioration in her health condition.
The statement noted that Khoshtaria has been examined by a cardiologist, neurologist, ophthalmologist, gynecologist, psychiatrist and rheumatologist, and has undergone a number of medical tests, including MRI examinations of the spine and spinal cord.
Khoshtaria’s most recent consultation with a rheumatologist took place on June 5, 2026. Following the consultation, medical recommendations were issued, additional examinations were conducted, and treatment was prescribed in accordance with current clinical guidelines and protocols.
The Service also said that neither Khoshtaria nor her lawyer had submitted requests for additional medical services or examinations since her admission to the facility. It added that the inmate had declined a follow-up consultation with a rheumatologist, while another appointment was scheduled for June 17, 2026, to which she had not objected.
Officials added that the attorney’s statement was reviewed and that information regarding Khoshtaria’s health condition was provided to him without delay. The Service stressed that both Khoshtaria’s lawyer and the lawyers of any other detainee or convicted individual are able to meet freely with the penitentiary institution’s director and the medical personnel responsible for treatment. The Service also reiterated its willingness to hold an additional meeting if necessary.
“The Penitentiary Service strictly urges any politically interested person to refrain from spreading similar false and unverified information”, the statement concluded.
