Member of the European Parliament Thierry Mariani on Friday criticised the latest resolution adopted by the European Parliament regarding Georgia, calling it interference in the internal affairs of a foreign state.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Mariani said the move contradicts the Parliament’s own criticism of foreign interference in European politics.
“This is interference in the affairs of a foreign state because in this Parliament we constantly adopt resolutions, for example against Russia, which tries to interfere in European politics. But what we did yesterday is exactly the same, because through this resolution we are trying to influence the population of Georgia against their government”, the MEP said.
According to the French MEP, similar resolutions will continue to be adopted until the Georgian authorities follow what he described as the “European Union path”.
“Do you want me to tell you a ‘secret’? I am sure we will soon meet again to discuss the tenth resolution, because you know this will never end. It will not end until there is a government that follows the European Union’s line. That is why I repeat, it resembles the old days, as if the Politburo were trying to impose policy on your state”, he concluded.
The European Parliament on Thursday adopted a resolution by majority vote calling on the Georgian authorities to release journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, who was convicted for assaulting a police officer, and opposition politician Elene Khoshtaria, who faces charges related to hostile activities and sabotage against the state.
The resolution was supported by 438 members of the European Parliament.
