MEP Danilo Della Valle criticises European Parliament resolution on Georgia, calls for dialogue instead of interference

Danilo Della Valle, a member of the European Parliament, on Friday described the latest resolution on Georgia adopted by the European Parliament as interference in the internal affairs of another country.

In his remarks, Valle stressed the need for dialogue, noting that such resolutions are often prepared based on double standards and geopolitical considerations.

“We decided to abstain from voting on this resolution. We should not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. Of course, we are not judges. If judges are to make decisions, then I do not understand what European politics has to do with this. Cooperation with countries outside the European Union is necessary. Dialogue is essential - to say what we disagree with and what our values are. But at the same time, it is important to listen to the other side as well. Therefore, I believe the European Union is not choosing the right path on this issue”, he said.

“We cannot know everything about everyone, and I think that in many cases such resolutions are prepared using double standards. They are often used to exert pressure on public opinion and also for geopolitical purposes. We should not maintain relations only with governments we like”, the MEP continued.

Valle concluded by emphasising that dialogue with the governments of all countries was necessary, and further adding that no one can make decisions on behalf of the Georgian people.

The European Parliament on Thursday adopted a resolution by majority vote calling on the Georgian authorities to release journalist Mzia Amaglobeli, who was convicted for assaulting a police officer, and opposition politician Elene Khoshtaria, who faces charges related to hostile activities and sabotage against the state. The resolution was supported by 438 members of the European Parliament.
