Georgia will rightfully take its place in European family, says Defence Minister on Independence Day

Georgian Defence Minister Irakli Chikovani on Monday said building a successful state was only possible through the efforts of a motivated and influence-free society.

In his address at an event dedicated to the country’s Independence Day, Chikovani emphasised that the Independence Day served as a reminder of the immense responsibility citizens were bearing toward the future of their homeland.

“May 26 reminds us of the great responsibility we have for the future of our country - not only to preserve our independence and statehood but also to fully comprehend the idea of sovereignty. Without that, building a truly free, democratic, united, and successful state would be impossible”, he said.

The Defense Minister also reviewed the important role of the Church and various religious communities in the nation-building process, and highlighted the importance of unity, noting that Abkhaz and Ossetian brothers must also have a place in shaping the country’s shared future.

“I am confident that through the efforts of the Government and our leaders, Georgia - rooted in its historic foundations and enriched with its centuries-old unique culture and identity - will take its rightful place in the common European family, where it will stand as a sovereign and equal member, not only culturally and historically, but also politically”, Chikovani concluded.
