Georgian Parliament official says Georgian Dream aligns with Trump’s policies, accuses USAID of funding revolutions

David Matikashvili, the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Thursday said the Prosecutor’s Office was taking “legally very sound steps” to investigate acts of sabotage.

Matikashvili’s remarks came in response to the freezing of seven non-governmental organisations’ bank accounts amid the ongoing investigation and the confession of the former USAID Administrator Samantha Power, who said that the organisation was spending a huge amount of financial resources in various countries to support desirable governments and remove unacceptable ones.

In his remarks, Matikashvili noted Power’s confession confirmed the accuracy of the Georgian Dream Government’s statements that SAID funds were used to stage revolutions and chaos.

“Those individuals and forces that orchestrate destructive actions from outside are relentless. They try to justify the destructive activities of these NGOs, but the state will be unwavering. Our country and its government will be firm against any attempts to act outside the constitution, misinform the public, or engage in violent or coercive actions against society. Of course, all measures will be taken fully in accordance with the law”, the Parliament official said.

“What Power admitted is that, for years, millions of dollars and significant financial resources were spent by USAID in countries including Ukraine and Moldova to support preferred governments and remove undesired ones. The Georgian Dream government aligns closely with the policies outlined by Donald Trump and openly states that these USAID funds were used against democracy, for revolutions and creating chaos. The lack of response or open support from the US administration naturally raises many questions and certain speculations in this regard”, he concluded.

The Georgian Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday announced that, as part of an ongoing investigation, the Tbilisi City Court approved the freezing of bank accounts belonging to several domestic non-governmental organisations.

According to the statement, the measure was taken within the framework of an investigation into acts of sabotage, attempted sabotage under aggravated circumstances, assistance to foreign or foreign-controlled organisations in hostile activities, and the mobilization of funds for actions directed against Georgia’s constitutional order and national security.
