Georgian PM: Georgia’s sovereignty must be respected as any other nation’s

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday stressed the importance of respecting Georgia’s sovereignty, underscoring that the country must be treated with the same regard as any other sovereign state.
“I want to remind everyone that Georgia is just as sovereign a state as the United Kingdom, or any other European or non-European country. Therefore, everyone should show the same respect to our state as they do to their own, or to other nations with which they cooperate”, Kobakhidze said.
Addressing recent debates over legislation previously branded as the “Russian law”, the Prime Minister emphasised that the measure in question merely required annual declarations from NGOs, with only light administrative and financial sanctions for non-compliance.
He pointed out that similar or stricter laws exist in other countries, yet those are considered acceptable.
“At the same time, other countries are adopting much stricter laws in the same direction, but for them, this is acceptable. Of course, this is a double standard”, he concluded.
