At the ceremony marking Diplomat’s Day, Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili on Wednesday highlighted the crucial role of diplomacy in safeguarding the country’s interests, stressing that Georgia’s strength lies in its wisdom, resilience, and cautious approach amid global uncertainty.
In her remarks, Botchorishvili underscored the importance of the diplomatic corps in advancing Georgia’s peace, stability, and development.
“First of all, I would like to thank you all for being here today and for celebrating Diplomat’s Professional Day. Our professional day as Georgian diplomats is linked to the great Georgian, Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani - a symbol of Georgian diplomacy - whose courage, wisdom, and boundless devotion to his homeland left us an inspiring example centuries ago. Much of our nation’s history is a history of struggle. Throughout our existence, geopolitics has not given diplomacy much space or freedom to act - yet it has taught us a great deal”, she said.
The Minister praised Georgian diplomats for their dedication and professionalism, noting that their work has often enabled the country to accomplish goals that once seemed unattainable.
“Today, when the global security system faces severe tests and international relations are rapidly transforming, Georgia can deal with its challenges only through wisdom, resilience, and caution. Even now, geopolitics seeks to diminish diplomacy, limit the opportunities for dialogue, and impose the language of force”, she noted.
She drew parallels between today’s challenges and the historical struggles faced by the Georgian nation, asserting that diplomacy has always played a vital role in preserving statehood and independence.
“Today, the steadfastness, loyalty, and professionalism of diplomats are of exceptional importance in defending our country’s interests, values, and dignity. In response to the flow of disinformation, Georgia’s voice must be heard clearly, honourably, and responsibly in every corner of the world - a voice of peace and deep faith in our future! Since the restoration of our country’s independence, Georgia’s diplomatic service has shared and endured every pain and success of our homeland”, she said.
Botchorishvili stated that while modern geopolitics often seeks to marginalise diplomacy in favour of power politics, Georgia must remain steadfast in upholding its values and promoting dialogue.
“To be a diplomat means to face every challenge with courage, to deeply feel your homeland, to defend and represent it despite many difficulties and obstacles. This has never been an easy task for Georgian diplomats. Yet, through the dedicated work and determination of honourable individuals, our country has time and again achieved the impossible”, the FM noted.
“I want to express my gratitude to every Georgian diplomat who, despite countless challenges, contributes invaluable work, loyalty, and resilience to the cause of our nation’s peace, stability, and development. I wish each of you the pride and determination to continue defending the sovereign interests of our homeland! Thank you to this small family for its strength and loyal service to our country. And once again, thank you all for being here today and celebrating this day with us”, Botchorishvili concluded.
