Georgian Parliament official: our nation escaped potential catastrophe thanks to wisdom of people and caution of Government

Giorgi Sosiashvili, the Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Science, and Youth Affairs, on Saturday warned that Georgia might not exist today if the country had followed certain narratives, emphasising the foresight of the Government and citizens in avoiding catastrophe.

Sosiashvili’s remarks followed after Axios reported on a confidential Russia-US plan to end the war at the cost of major concessions from Ukraine - including recognition of Crimea and Donbas as Russian territory.

In his remarks, Sosiashvili argued that Georgia narrowly avoided following a path that could have jeopardized its sovereignty.

“It is clear to the whole society today where they were pushing us. Our country might not even exist if we had followed that narrative and slogan - they destroyed their own country and then moved on to involve other countries. The wisdom of our people and the foresight of our Government averted this misfortune and catastrophe”, he said.

The official further stressed that leadership required foresight, careful evaluation of one’s capabilities, and a clear understanding of international dynamics.

“When you are the President of a country, you need greater foresight, an assessment of the situation - what forces you have, whom you can trust, and whom you are dealing with. Therefore, it is difficult for Ukraine to be in this situation because the country has ended up in a worse position than before”, Sosiashvili concluded.

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Saturday said that external actors, internal opposition groups and certain NGOs attempted to push Georgia toward war after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, arguing that the Government’s restraint prevented Georgia from facing the same tragic choices Ukraine faces today.
