Georgian Parliament official: Georgia has not changed its foreign policy course - Europe itself has undergone significant shifts

Gia Volski, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and the First Vice Speaker of the Parliament, on Tuesday warned that decisions aimed at provoking internal unrest and confrontation in Georgia would be unjust, dangerous, and ultimately damaging to Europe itself.
In his interview with Imedi TV, Volski commented on the upcoming session of the European Council, expectations surrounding statements on Georgia, and the potential adoption of harsh resolutions that, in his view, could seek to destabilise the country.
“It is unthinkable to adopt decisions that would set the entire nation against itself by using leverage to somehow anger people and provoke a Maidan and bloodshed in Georgia. I believe such severe decisions would face significant resistance”, he said.
The official argued that attempts to punish the entire Georgian population for not engaging in unrest or violent confrontation would be both unjust and counterproductive.
“Of course, we expect very harsh wording toward us - claims that [Mikheil] Saakashvili is a beacon of democracy and that he must be released. I cannot speak about specific decisions, because not everyone shares the same views as Kaja Kallas, whose husband, until recently, was doing extensive business in Russia, nor as representatives of the Baltic states, who traded wine and, as has now been revealed, rubber with Russia, as well as whisky, and have established enormous black holes in trade. Based on the attitudes of such people, what kind of resolution should we expect?” he noted.
“A decision that would, so to speak, punish all of Georgia, the entire population, because a sufficient number of people did not take to the streets and did not organise a Maidan, that is, bloodshed - this kind of formulation and decision is hanging in the air, in the hope that some tragedy might occur here, resulting in the return to power of a puppet Saakashvili regime. We may face such a reality”, Volski continued.
He further emphasised that Georgia had not changed its foreign policy course, while Europe itself had undergone significant shifts, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine and evolving US security priorities.
“However, they have fewer chances, because punishing an entire society, even under the conditions of such an unjust forum, would deal a serious blow to Europe itself. Second, and most importantly, it would be unjust, since Georgia has never changed its foreign policy course”, the Parliament official said.
“Europe has changed - on the one hand, doing everything to remain in the position outlined in the new security concept of the United States, and on the other hand, trying to manage the situation in a way that somehow prevents the de-escalation of the war in Ukraine. This is the main objective. What decisions they will propose to achieve this objective is a separate question”, Volski concluded.
