Georgian PM: EU’s inaction toward Georgia reflects lack of independent decision-making

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Thursday said that restoring constructive relations with Georgia objectively served the European Union’s interests, adding that the EU’s failure to do so indicated an inability of the European bureaucracy to act sovereignly and in line with Europe’s real interests.

In his interview with Imedi TV, Kobakhidze criticised the European Union’s current approach towards Georgia, pointing to what he described as double standards, illogical comparisons, and decisions that contradict the EU’s own strategic and economic interests.

“Objectively, it is in the European Union’s interests to restore healthy relations with Georgia. When it does not do so, we can draw the logical conclusion that the European bureaucracy is unable to act sovereignly and in line with the objective interests of the European Union and European society”, he said.

The Prime Minister emphasised that European bureaucracy often compared Georgia with countries that had entirely different geopolitical and infrastructural realities, which he described as absurd.

“They compare our country with Moldova, with certain neighbouring countries or Central Asian countries. This is complete absurdity. A meeting related to connectivity and transit was held, attended by seven countries, and the only country not participating out of eight was Georgia. Georgia is the only country that has access to the sea and provides the other seven countries with access to the sea. This is how absurd European bureaucracy has become”, he noted.

He argued that this selective approach further proved the prevalence of double standards within European institutions.

“It is clear that they are unable to act sovereignly and in accordance with the objective interests of European society. Otherwise, the European Union would strive to return to healthy relations with Georgia. Corruption has been eliminated in Ukraine and Moldova and human rights are perfectly protected there - of course, even irony is unnecessary here. Everyone knows everything very well, yet we see double standards that European bureaucracy frequently resorts to”, Kobakhidze concluded.
