Revaz Lominadze, Georgia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva, in his capacity as Coordinator of the Eastern European Group of the UN Human Rights Council, on Wednesday held a meeting with Alexander Yánez Deleuze, the Permanent Representative of Venezuela.
The meeting was held at the request of Venezuela’s Permanent Mission, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.
The Ministry reported that Ambassador Yánez Deleuze briefed the Georgian side on ongoing developments in Venezuela. The Georgian delegation noted that Georgia is closely monitoring the situation in the country and expressed hope that future processes will unfold with due consideration for the interests of the Venezuelan people.
The Georgian side underscored that Venezuela’s recognition of Georgia’s occupied regions of Abkhazia and the so-called South Ossetia as independent states constitutes a gross violation of the fundamental principles of international law.
Georgia expressed hope that recent developments in Venezuela would contribute to a review and revocation of this unlawful decision, in line with Georgia’s national interests and international legal norms.
