Nikoloz Samkharadze, the chair of the foreign relations committee of the Georgian Parliament, said on Monday that there was “absolute understanding and support” from Slovakia for the positions of the Georgian government.
In his remarks, Samkharadze noted that the Slovak government strongly supports Georgia’s European integration, adding that this was a key topic of discussion during a meeting between the speakers of the Georgian and Slovak parliaments.
“We presented our vision of the problems that currently exist in relations between Tbilisi and Brussels, particularly the unfair approaches that Brussels takes toward the Georgian government, including those based on political motives. There is absolute understanding and support for our positions from the Slovak side. They firmly support Georgia’s European integration. During the conversation, there was also regret over specific decisions made by Brussels”, Samkharadze said.
He also noted that the meeting covered cooperation in the fields of defence and security, education, and youth policy.
“The main issues are trade, the economy, and tourism. In this regard, we can say that relations between Georgia and Slovakia are developing quite dynamically. Recently, a delegation of Slovak companies visited Tbilisi, which, hopefully, will further increase the number of Slovak tourists in Georgia”, he added.
Samkharadze further emphasised the dynamic development of political relations between the two countries.
“Over the past few months, visits have taken place by the president, the speaker of parliament, the foreign minister, and the culture minister to Slovakia. This clearly shows that there are strong partnership relations between the two countries. Now we are expecting a reciprocal visit from the Slovak side to Georgia. It is gratifying that Slovakia remains a loyal supporter of Georgia and shares the concerns we have regarding the European Union”, he concluded.
