Georgian PM says “karma returned” to Keir Starmer after sanctions on Georgia’s top-rated TV company

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday remarked that Georgia’s top-rated media company had been sanctioned by the “world’s lowest-rated Prime Minister” - a reference to Keir Starmer, who resigned “in tears” yesterday - asserting that “this is karma returning to Mr. Starmer”.

In his remarks, Kobakhidze noted that neither Imedi TV nor POSTV will face any operational difficulties, and media freedom in Georgia will remain fully protected.

“What happened is shameful. It is a shame for Britain, because Britain has traditionally been regarded as the birthplace of human rights, yet it decided to shut down a television station in Georgia and attack free media in our country. This is England’s shame, Britain’s shame, and personally Starmer’s shame, who was the world’s lowest-rated prime minister”, he said.

“The rest is not interesting. We guarantee that neither Imedi TV nor POSTV will encounter any problems in terms of operations, and media freedom in Georgia will be fully protected, regardless of what kind of attacks we may witness from the British authorities against media freedom in our country”, the PM continued.

Kobakhidze concluded by emphasising that about a year ago, he promised that media freedom and the media in Georgia would face no problems, and he fulfilled that promise.

“Today, I make the same commitment: neither Imedi nor POSTV will suffer any losses, and both television companies will continue operating without interruption and without any setbacks”, the Prime Minister concluded.
