Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Friday did not rule out the possible involvement of the domestic opposition in the attempt to smuggle the explosive substance “hexogen” from Ukraine into Georgia.
Speaking to reporters, Kaladze noted that “everything is possible” given the forces that, in his words, were acting against Georgia and the Georgian people.
“Everything is possible, considering the kind of power that is fighting against our country and our people. We know that rootless people are capable of anything. They do not care about the Georgian people or about the future of this country. Accordingly, I exclude nothing, but let us wait for the investigation, which will provide answers to all questions. Once again, I emphasise that nothing can be ruled out”, the official said.
When asked about media reports suggesting that Bacho Akhalaia, the former Defence Minister under the United National Movement Government, could be linked to the incident, Kaladze declined to name specific individuals, reiterating that the investigation would provide answers.
“I don’t know, but I am confident that the relevant agencies have more details regarding this matter, regarding the threats we have been hearing about over the past months. I am sure there is a lot of information. Of course, everything will be answered, and there will be a response within the framework of the law. I don’t want to talk about specific people, specific names, and surnames. Let’s wait for the investigation”, he concluded.
New information has surfaced regarding the case of transporting the explosive substance hexogen from Ukraine into Georgia.
At a special briefing held by the State Security Service of Georgia, officials stated that the explosives were handed over to the driver of a truck on Ukrainian territory by Ukraine’s security services.
The investigation is examining whether there are links between this case, the upcoming October 4 elections in Georgia, and plans announced by radical groups.
