Georgian Parliament Speaker accuses EU Ambassador of undermining sovereignty through election interference

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday accused the European Union’s Ambassador of meddling in Georgia’s internal affairs and undermining the country’s sovereignty during the 2024 parliamentary elections.
Responding to a question about whether other actors besides Russia pose a threat to Georgia’s sovereignty, Papuashvili pointed to “several European countries” and, in particular, the EU Ambassador in Tbilisi.
“Even the EU ambassador was involved in violating our sovereignty through election interference”, the Speaker said.
“He made political statements regarding the election campaign. To give a simple example, he assessed one of our election banners and called it disgusting. Of course, no one asks him what our campaign banners should look like. When he comments on one party’s banner and campaign tactics, but not on others, it means he is taking part in the campaign against that party”, he concluded.
