Ahmed Hussen, the Chair of the Canadian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and International Development Committee, on Wednesday reaffirmed Canada’s strong support for Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and its European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations during an Independence Day event.

Speaking at a ceremony marking Georgia’s Independence Day, Hussen highlighted the historical resilience of the Georgian people and emphasised the importance of deepening bilateral relations between Canada and Georgia, including through parliamentary cooperation and strategic dialogue.

“It was a great honour and pleasure for me to join efforts aimed at encouraging more Canadian parliamentarians to participate in the Georgia Friendship Group, which seeks to deepen relations between Georgia and Canada”, he said.

Hussen noted that since regaining independence in 1991, Georgia has been building a democratic and forward-looking state despite historical challenges.

“You have preserved your culture, faith, and identity for centuries despite numerous challenges and difficulties. Canada supports Georgia’s sovereignty and your Euro-Atlantic aspirations. We once again reaffirm Canada’s unwavering support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We also reaffirm our support for Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, which are based on shared values, history, culture, and a long-standing commitment to democracy. For centuries, Georgia has been located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, serving as a bridge of cultures, trade, and connections. Today, in a world full of uncertainty, this role is even more important”, he noted.

He underlined Georgia’s geographic position as a bridge between Europe and Asia, stating that this role remains strategically important in today’s uncertain global environment.

“Many continue to closely observe Georgia’s strategic location and its role in regional connectivity. This already contributes - and will continue to contribute - to broader economic cooperation, the security of transit corridors, and regional resilience. When Georgia makes significant investments in supply chains and transport corridors, it not only improves the welfare of its own population but also effectively enhances the economic conditions of its neighbours. Therefore, this is a direction Canada supports”, Hussen said.

The Canadian MP also stressed Georgia’s importance in regional connectivity, transit corridors, and economic cooperation, arguing that investments in infrastructure and supply chains benefit not only Georgia but also its neighbours.

“Georgia’s stability is therefore important not only for the South Caucasus but also for the broader European and Black Sea security architecture. That is why it is important for Georgia to succeed. We, of course, recognise the importance of long-term peace, stability, and prosperity in the South Caucasus, as well as Georgia’s constructive role in this process”, he noted.

“Georgia has demonstrated a very important commitment to international peace and security, and per capita, it is the largest contributor among non-NATO countries to NATO-led missions. This is one of the reasons why Canada and Georgia have developed strong cooperation within the NATO partnership framework. We are also joining forces to ensure Euro-Atlantic peace, security, and stability”, Hussen continued.

Hussen concluded that Canada views Georgia’s stability as essential for broader regional security and expressed support for continued cooperation in trade, investment, peace, and security initiatives.

“Thus, there is a strong shared foundation of values and traditions between our two countries. However, I always believe that through parliamentary groups, other initiatives, and the hard work of the embassy and ambassador here, this relationship will further deepen and develop. The purpose of this evening is to celebrate Georgia’s Independence Day and continue supporting Georgia in its aspirations. This includes promoting mutually beneficial trade and investment, fostering more inclusive economic growth, as well as strengthening peace and security in the Caucasus region”, he said.

In conclusion, Ahmed Hussen addressed the participants of the event in Georgian: “Long live Georgia! Long live Canada!”
