Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday expressed strong support for the ruling party’s decision to reintroduce the treason clause in the Criminal Code, emphasising that those who acted against state interests must be held accountable.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday said the treason clause, which was removed from the Criminal Code by the previous Government in April 2007 -shortly before the August war - would be reinstated. The ruling party is set to begin discussions on the matter in the Parliament this week.
“Over the past years and months, we have witnessed certain groups and individuals who were openly following foreign interests and executing tasks assigned from abroad. Their actions were fueled by hatred and malice, aimed at dividing society. We have seen specific evidence of plans to finance extremist organisations and radicals. There were several attempts at a coup”, the ruling party official said.
“Naturally, all those who engaged in such activities and acted against state interests must be held accountable. Every question must receive an appropriate answer”, Kaladze concluded.
