Georgian Parliament Committee Chair says critics of Georgia now doing the same to protect themselves

Levan Makhashvili, the chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European integration committee, on Saturday accused the United Kingdom and Germany of blatant hypocrisy and double standards, arguing that states criticising Georgia for certain laws were adopting similar measures themselves.

Commenting on the United Kingdom’s accelerated adoption of legislation against hostile foreign activities, Makhashvili highlighted what he described as clear inconsistencies in the positions of certain Western partners.

“Every country, especially amid today’s political instability, seeks to protect its democracy, electoral processes, politics, and economy. Georgia is doing the same. At the same time, we clearly see the double standards and double approach from certain countries that, for their own narrow political goals, try to criticise Georgia and label things as ‘Russian’ laws, while they themselves face the same threats and take exactly the same measures”, he said.

The official also pointed to what he described as a pattern of unfair criticism from countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany.

“The hypocrisy and double standards we have seen from the United Kingdom, Germany, and others are very obvious, considering that they once criticised Georgia entirely without justification”, Makhashvili concluded.
