Georgian Parliament official dismisses European Parliament resolution as “meaningless”

Levan Makhashvili, the Chair of the Committee on European Integration of the Georgian Parliament, on Wednesday sharply criticised a resolution on Georgia prepared by MEP Rasa Juknevičienė, calling it “meaningless” and lacking any legal basis.

In his remarks, Makhashvili accused the resolution of being “full of biased events, assessments, and often lies”, stating that such documents ultimately “discredit themselves”.

“This resolution has no legal basis, no binding authority for the Commission or anyone else. What they often try to do is to create noise through such resolutions and shape a perception of an imaginary reality within society”, the official said.

“With resolutions of this type, filled with biased events, assessments, and often falsehoods, they end up discrediting themselves. Naturally, the weight and significance of such resolutions decline from one to the next”, Makhashvili concluded.

The European Parliament on Tuesday held a debate on Georgia. The resolution calls for the immediate release of Mikheil Saakashvili, the holding of new parliamentary elections, and the recognition of Salome Zourabichvili's legitimacy as President.
