MEP Tomasz Froelich to European Parliament: stop lecturing Georgia - respect its sovereignty

Tomasz Froelich, a member of the European Parliament, on Wednesday said Georgia is often discussed in the European Parliament because it follows a different path from many other countries.

Speaking during a debate on Georgia, Froelich argued that the country represents traditional values and pursues an independent foreign policy.

“We are talking about Georgia again. Why? Because it is different. It embodies Christian values, protects itself from woke ideology and has a pragmatic approach to foreign policy. They do not want to turn into Kyiv, and that is their right - they are a sovereign state and we must respect that”, the MEP said.

The MEP also criticised what he described as external attempts to influence domestic politics in Georgia.

“However, we are trying to lecture them; we are calling for protests against the government, and we are doing this through NGOs. Three thousand NGOs for a population of four million - this is unheard of anywhere in the world. Now government buildings are being attacked and you want to call that freedom? That is unacceptable”, he continued.

He also pointed to Georgia’s economic performance, highlighting what he described as strong growth indicators.

“Let us look at the facts: eight percent economic growth - something we can only dream of. If you look at government indices, they even look better than some member states. They rank first in Central and Eastern Asia when it comes to the economy”, the MEP noted.

Froelich concluded that Georgia does not need external interference, but rather respect for its sovereignty.

“They do not need lectures, they do not need regime change; they need respect - respect for national sovereignty”, he concluded.
